Where is the Corner Tavern? I don't see it.

Look low. The Corner Tavern is a basement bar (a common find in New England). It is in the basement of the building on the northwest corner of Mass Ave and Marlborough St. There is a little tiny sign on the window. Looking forward to seeing those that made it last year and hopefully some new faces. UNC SILS has been gracious enough to send me some awesome swag - come get yours!

West v. UNC. Five Reasons UNC Wins!

So, after humming and hawing over a date, the UNC Almuni & Friends Shindig overlaps with the West Thomson party on Monday, July 23. You may be thinking, "What should I do? I go to the West party every year, I don't want to miss it." Listed below are five reasons the UNC Shindig will top the West party:

  1. No line for the food. Everyone at the West party has to wait in line for the food. Last year, there were multiple lines. At the UNC party, there will be yummy herbivore & carnivore snacks for everyone, no line waiting required.
  2. UNC SILS has provided us with some swag. Show your UNC pride with some free stuff.
  3. Ask yourself: Do I really need another West tote bag? I am fairly new to AALL and I have an entire file cabinet draw filled with tote bags from various vendors. They are all dying a slow unfashionable death.
  4. Meet new people. Some conference veterans know just about everyone at the Annual Meeting, come meet some of the recent graduates from UNC SILS and some old friends you have not seen in a while.
  5. Who wants to stay inside the Hynes Convention Center & the Conference Hotels for 4 days? West is partying at the Sheraton, been there done that...take a little stroll down the street, get some fresh air and head over to Corner Tavern.
There is another alternative, make an appearance at both! Yes, it is possible to visit the West party from 6:30 - 7:30 and then head over (just a hop, skip and a jump) to Corner Tavern at 7:30pm.

Cheap Eats

Since many of us travel on a very limited budget when attending AALL and Boston is a very expensive city, here are a few places that offer eats on the cheap.

  • Moody's Falafel Palace - Located in Cambridge, this is bang for the vegetarian buck (they offer carnivorous options, too). It is a tiny place usually filled with MIT students, just off Central Square. If you are planning an excursion to Havard Sq, get off one stop early at Central Sq., grab a falafel and take a walk up Mass Ave to Harvard Sq.
  • The Dirty Water Dog - The hot dog carts can be found throughout the Boston Commons and around the Public Gardens. I never once got sick and some offer veggie dogs. They also sell Italian sausages with all the fixins.
  • City Place Food Court - Located across the street from New England Law Boston near the Boston Commons, the food court offers restaurants and food court fare. The taco/burrito stand is pretty good, fresh, and cheap.
  • Dim Sum - Boston has a great Chinatown, that boasts a broad assortment of Asian cuisine. China Pearl is my personal favorite, but there are many more options.
Other ideas, pizza in the North End, pho in Chinatown, the local pubs all of which serve food, and the Trident Bookstore cafe.

Location, Location, Location!

We've got a venue and a great one at that! Our gathering will be held at the Corner Tavern just around the corner from the Hynes Convention Center - map (just on the other side of Newbury Street - Hello, Shopping!).

There will be light fare provided by the UNC Chapel Hill Kathrine R. Everett Law Library. The drinks are up to you, but I hear they have a mighty nice bar. Our group will be in the back room.

Looking forward to seeing everyone on Monday, July 23rd at 7:30pm at the Corner Tavern, 421 Marlborough Street, Boston.

Meetup at AALL 2012 Boston

CC attribution monkeyatlarge
The AALL Annual Meeting is nearly upon us. Well, it's not until July, but time flies. Last year, in Philadelphia, was our inaugural UNC SILS Alumni meetup/social event and this year we are trying it again, but with a little more notice. Some details are still being worked out, but the day and time are set.

Monday, July 23rd at 7:30 p.m.

More details to follow on the location. If you have any suggestions for a location, please post them in the comments section or contact me. Having gone to law school in Boston, I have some ideas, but it's been a while since I lived in the area.

The event is open to alumni of UNC SILS and friends of UNC's Kathrine R. Everett Law Library.

Looking forward to meeting more of our UNC SILS Alumni.

Welcome!

Welcome! This blog is a space for alumni of UNC Chapel Hill's School of Information and Library Science working in law libraries to connect. It is a space to post announcements and keep in contact with colleagues. Please encourage others to join our group.
